The Dual Anniversary: 200 years of the Battle of the Nations and 100 years of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations

For Leipzig and the surrounding region, October 2013 is a time for commemorating, celebrating and participating. In the autumn of 1813, the Battle of the Nations outside the gates of the city terminated the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon’s troops. One hundred years later, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) was inaugurated. To mark this dual anniversary, citizens, academics, religious and political dignitaries from all over Europe will be congregating in Leipzig to look together - at the past and into the future.
